A hypermedia document contains INFORMATION that you may navigate through.
There are usually multiple paths you can take as you journey through the information.
The information may appear in several formats :- text, graphics, sound, movies
Hypermedia is non-linear. Readers can explore cross-references as they desire.
It also means that the same document may serve different audiences.
Here are some examples of how hypermedia may be used.
Cross-referenced documents make hypermedia a useful source of reference material.
Readers can explore the documents by following the path that best suits them.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Hypermedia also includes sound, video.......
Hypermedia may even be a good way to get information about your product across.
Potential users of your product can explore the features that interest them.
And it can be a useful way of distributing or receiving various types of information.
These slides are NOT hypermedia. (One day, time permitting.................)
Instead of information only existing on your local disk, or a small network.........
Documents can be distributed around the world and linked together.
Now all this forms one very big, and very powerful information database!!!!
You can use Mosaic (Mac, Windows, X) or Cello to view this information.
Of course, you must have your computer connected to the Internet.
Global Hypermedia is based on World-Wide Web Hypermedia Servers.
These servers distribute HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) documents.
HTML documents are simply plain text documents with special tags.
They may be created using any text editor, including VI, notepad, and lots of others.
The document tags tell the viewer how to display the information.
They also provide information on where to retrieve related documents from.
HTML Hyperedit (this package!) can be used to easily create HTML documents.
You can load in a plain text document, and convert it to HTML using the controls.
This means that you don't have to remember the format of all of the HTML tags.
Think about how you will present the information in a logical order.
Make logical and intuitive links within your documents.
Too many links can be very confusing. Make sure each has a purpose.
One good method is to organise your documents into two categories.
Detailed documents shouldn't contain many links, but may be many pages.
Overview documents should be short, easy to read and contain links to more details.
Press EXIT and select HTML HyperEdit Tutorial from the Help menu.

HTML HyperEdit supports both beginner and advanced modes. Two many buttons on the screen may cause confusion for anyone just learning HTML. Hence, buttons used for some of the more advanced features are covered in beginner mode.
Simply click on the button to change modes.
The button panel for advanced modes contains the following:
Images
Custom Formatting Tags
Ampersand and Bracket Conversion
Signatures/Footers
Shortcut Keys
Signatures
Signatures, or perhaps more correctly footers are simply lines of HTML that may be inserted automatically at the bottom of your document. They are usually used to identify the person, department and other information related to the document.
There are two steps to steps to adding a signature.
Defining the Signature
This is done by simply creating a new document, that is the signature. Start with an empty document and create the lines of HTML you wish to use for a signature.
To define the signature, RIGHT-CLICK on the SIGNATURE button. This stores the signature.
When you choose EXIT HTML Hyperedit, make sure you say YES to SAVE CHANGES, in order to store your signature too. Save the file as the same HTML HyperEdit.
Using the Signature
To add a signature to the bottom of your document, simply click the SIGNATURE button and it will be automatically added.
Shortcut Keys
There are several shortcut keys and buttons that can be used to quickly format text, without having to go through the FORMAT menu.
The advanced buttons contain the following single-letter formatting keys:
F - Code
I - Italics
B - Bold
P - Preformatted
Q - Quotes
A - Address
The following shortcut keys may also be used:
CTRL-B - Bold
CTRL-I - Italics
CTRL-F - Code
Unformatting/Removing Tags
If you change your mind after formatting some text, you can press the UNFORMAT button to remove the tags.
This is achieved by highlighting some tagged text (including the tags) and press unformat to remove the tags. If you only highlight the first tags, then they'll be removed. Similarly if you only highlight the tags following the text, they'll be removed.
Note: The highlight should begin/end on a tag. Not a blank space or any other character.

As the cursor is moved around the editor, the HelpMe window in the bottom right of the screen changes to explain the function of the object that the cursor is currently over. <P>
Clicking on the switch will toggle between beginner and advance mode. <P>

<H2>Converting paragraphs</H2>
This is the next setup you may wish to do to convert a plain text file. It adds a
paragraph marker onto the end of every paragraph. <P>

The simplest HTML Example
This is a level one heading
Welcome to the world of HTML.
This is one paragraph.
And this is a second.
HTML documents are in plain text format and may be created using any text editor.
They consist of text with special tags. These tags tell the viewer how to display the information.
They also provide information on the location of related documents.
You can view HTML documents using NCSA Mosaic for Windows, Mac, X, Cello etc
HTML Hyperedit can be used to easily create the documents.
Here is an example of how to create a simple HTML document.
First we'll look at giving the document a title.
Highlight the area of text the you wish to perform the operation on.
The simplest HTML example
Then press the TITLE button.
<TITLE>A Simple HTML Document</TITLE>
The HTML tags are automatically placed!
The document is titled.
Now we'll add a heading to an area of the document.
Highlight the area of text the you wish to perform the operation on.
Press the HEADING button.
This is a level one heading
Then select the heading level you require.
<H1>This is a level one heading</H1>
The HTML heading tag is now in place.
This is one paragraph.
And this is a second.
At some stage while editing the document press the PARAGRAPH button.
And paragraph markers will be automatically placed into your document.
This is one paragraph.<P>
And this is a second.<P>
Here's an image of a cat.gif cat.
I'd like to emphasize this!
Here's my email address.
Lets just add a bit more text. Here's another three lines.
Add the filename of the image that you wish to embed, and highlight it.
Select the image button. (Hint: Use the right mouse button to change alignment.)
And the image tag is placed!
Here's an image of a <IMG SRC=
cat.gif
> cat.
I can also set the style of an area of the document.
Select FORMAT, and then choose a style. In this case, BOLD.
I'd like to emphasize this!
The tags required for formatting are placed.
And lets put an email address at the bottom of the document.
Select the ADDRESS button.
<ADDRESS>Here's my email address.</ADDRESS>
My address is now correctly formatted.
Kangaroo
Koala
Sandgroper
Suppose you want to format a list of items.
By pressing the right mouse button I can select a numbered or plain list.
Highlighting the list and pressing the button will format it.
<LI> Kangaroo
<LI> Koala
<LI> Emu
<LI> Sandgroper
</UL>
And the list is formatted!
<LI> Kangaroo
<LI> Koala
<LI> Emu
<LI> Sandgroper
</UL>
And the list is formatted!
Here is a list of Gophers
Now I want to create a link to another resource, such as a list of Gophers.
After selecting the word that will become the link, press LINK.
Select the type of item you wish to create a link to.
Enter the name of the server here, or select previous item.
info.curtin.edu.au
Then enter the directory, or username if TELNET. NB: Gopher item type.
1/Other Gopher and Information Servers
And finally the file name (if required).
Here is a list of Gophers
Click OK
Here is a list of <A HREF =
gopher://info.curtin.edu.au:70/1/Other Gopher and Information Servers/
>Gophers</A>
And the link is created.
Now isn't that easier than trying to remember the tags?
You can also set anchors, preformatting and other things.
